The disability wheeler and hippocampe, provided by North Ayrshire Council and managed by Ardrossan Community Development Trust, are based in a temporary container on South Beach promenade in Ardrossan.
This is a very exciting project and means that everyone can have access to the beach along the promenade, no matter the persons abilities, we believe that access to the sand and the sea brings many benefits to families in our community and we will continue to ensure that the facilities we provide to the community are fully inclusive. We are delighted to have Hippocampe’s and Wheeler allowing locals and visitors alike to get access to South Beach, the sand and sea and all the benefits that provides.
After the successful introduction to the promenade last year of the Hippocampe and disability wheeler the trust is delighted to say that an additional Hippocamp will be available in the future, this is great news as last summer there were times when we were fully booked.
This is part of our inclusion for all ethos that will see more families access Ardrossan South Beach for a day out or a stroll along the beach.

A trial was held at Ardrossan beach on the 12th May 2020. We had 2 wheelers trialed on the day, The Hippocampe and The Trekinetic, with the secretary of the North Ayrshire Access Panel trying them out.
The Hippocampe worked really well at Ardrossan beach and if staffing can be secured for site, this will be the product procured for the beach.
We hope to procure 2 Hippocampe’s (one small and one large) for this location.
